Play the Long Game with Human-AI Collaboration

C-suite leaders are captivated by AI’s potential to increase productivity, from generating insights to automating routine tasks. But many studies suggest technology works best when it complements human effort, not when it replaces it.

U.S. Needs More Power for AI—but Critical Equipment Is Pricey and Scarce

The U.S. needs massive amounts of electricity to power the AI race, but it is getting harder to deliver. Investors and developers are putting financing decisions on hold as they try to determine how much more their projects will cost to complete. About 28% of planned wind, solar and battery projects have been delayed or canceled, according to an Atlas Public Policy analysis of government energy data. That is about 42,000 megawatts of capacity, roughly on par with the existing solar, storage and wind energy in California. Delays and cancellations had been growing but recently accelerated, according to the data, which provides a snapshot of existing and planned power generation across the country. Only about 10% of projects, or 12,000 megawatts, were delayed or canceled in 2022. Wall Street Journal

The Spotify of construction? Why this tech tool is shaking up the building world

Calgary-based Mercator’s business development platform uses artificial intelligence (AI) to track every step of a construction project’s life cycle – from land acquisition to building permits – giving industry players more insight into upcoming opportunities. It addresses a critical blind spot in the construction industry, using vast amounts of data to track who’s working with whom, where and on what projects.  Globe and Mail

World's Largest Building Construction Site Shares Development Update

Saudi Arabia has launched a request for companies to form new consortiums for the Mukaab, a cuboid structure that could become the world's largest building. The $50 billion project is being constructed in the New Murabba of Riyadh and is part of the "Saudi Vision 2030" initiative. The New Murabba Development Company (NMDC), which manages the Mukaab's construction site, issued a prequalification notice on May 5, with a June 12 deadline, calling for companies to enter consortiums for the building's central structure, which will be approximately 1,312-feet-tall. The Mukaab will be the largest building in the world by volume once completed, with over 60 million square meters of space inside. Newsweek

AI in Design

Architecture today is driving AI ‘towards the direction that you’ve already preconceived in your mind’

In industrial and architectural design and manufacturing, the use of AI may flip the industry on its head, as computer systems take on greater parts of the creative process and humans return to some parts of artisanal production, architectural designer Tim Fu told Fortune’s Brainstorm AI conference in London. Using the example of a modern column he designed by prompting AI with “contemporary” language, Fu explained how he then sent the designs to a stonemason in Dresden who then carved them by hand. The disruption posed for architects and designers by AI is the speed with which it can move a design from initial inspiration to 3D-rendering—within minutes, instead of weeks. Fortune
